Compute is spent on pooled gateway requests (per-request metering with an audit line each) and is never needed for reading the directory or routing your own keys. The full earn, spend and trust-level model — including referral milestones — is documented on the earn page.

Do I need a credit card to use Uprouter?
No — and there is no checkout on this site at all. The directory is free to browse, routing your own API keys (BYOK) has no subscription, and pooled gateway requests are paid in compute, which is granted at signup and earned through check-ins, reviews, referrals and bounties. There is nothing to buy.
What is compute?
Compute is Uprouter’s internal unit for pooled gateway usage: requests routed through Uprouter-hosted capacity meter per request against your compute balance, with per-request audit lines (tokens, latency, cost). BYOK requests — where the gateway routes through your own provider keys — don’t draw a Uprouter subscription of any kind. The full earn/spend model is on the earn page.
How is the directory free?
Ads (opt-out via the consent banner) keep reading free, and provider submissions are free with editorial selection — there is no pay-to-rank. Every list is ordered by data: free-credit value, price, risk rating or community score.
